Summer time responsibilities

Our summer weeks and weekends are usually open and unscheduled. I like it this way.

The difference about this summer is that my little sister is getting married at the end of August.

There are only two of us in her wedding party, and we are sharing maid matron of honor duties. In addition to this, my son is the Ring Bearer and my daughter the Flower Girl. I love my sister with all my heart, and I’m so excited for her and her fiance. I don’t do any of my duties begrudgingly. I’m just getting a little stressed over everything that is entailed.

I’m listing everything here so that I can reassure myself  that everything is manageable and there’s no reason to stress. Lists soothe me.

For Wedding:

  • get dress
  • get shoes & jewelry
  • wedding toast
  • G’s clothing
  • I’s clothing
  • G’s shoes
  • I’s shoes
  • address invitations/assemble invitations

For Bachelorette weekend:

  • send e-vite to girls
  • send email about spa services
  • restaurant reservations
  • email loose itinerary to girls
  • organize “panties” game
  • other games?
  • favors: bachelorette survival boxes

Kitchen Tea: (explanation follows below)

  • choose date & location
  • decorations
  • invitations
  • favors

A Kitchen Tea is a South African tradition. It’s like a shower, but also very different. Some of the details are:

  • It’s always a surprise for the bride-to-be.
  • The invitation is written in the form of a poem.
  • It’s always a tea, as opposed to lunch or brunch.
  • Guests bring small, inexpensive kitchen items as gifts. Just wooden spoons, spatulas, oven mitts, etc.
  • Guests write a *naughty* poem, hinting to what their gift is. For example, when we threw a Kitchen Tea for my sister in law, I gave her a silicon oven mitt, and my poem was all about using protection…The key to this is that the poem has got to be NAUGHTY!! It’s supposed to embarrass the bride-to-be.
  • The bride-to-be reads the poems aloud and tries to guess the item. Every time she guesses wrong, she has to drink champagne. So yeah, it’s basically a Drinking Game when your own mom gets you sloshed. Nice, huh?

Thanks for indulging me in my list-making, de-stressing process. I’m feeling better already. I hope you all have a nice weekend planned. I’m spending a lot of mine addressing wedding invitations and stuffing envelopes.

What do you have planned for this weekend?

I have my lists for everything, too. It makes life so much more manageable. This weekend, my daughter has a softball game and we have a meeting at church. Other than that, we are just hanging out! I am going to enjoy it!!

Are you S African?

I am a HUGE lister! There are lists all over our house :)

Today, we have a birthday party to go to this morning and then the hubbie is taking the boys out to stay with his parents for the night (about an hour away) so I get some quiet mama time! :)

Beach tomorrow!

I LOVE lists. I actually feel that they soothe me as well. Yesterday afternoon I made a list of things I wanted to do this weekend and I feel great knowing that I’ve crossed a few of them off already. :) Next on my list…putting up a new blog post…

@ Denise~
How exciting! I had to wait until I was officially a “teenager” before I was allowed to get my ears pierced.

@ Marci~
I love ‘open’ weekends like that. Enjoy.

@ Renee~
Yes, but we emigrated to the states when I was 5 years old, so I was raised here. My parents and siblings all live here, but the rest of my relatives all live in South Africa. It’s such an amazing, beautiful country — that is plagued by so many troubles.

@ Ang~
Your weekend sounds divine. It sounds like something I should suggest to my husband. ; )

@ PP~
Absolutely…lists are the way to go. I’ll be sure to check in with your posts later, once I finish these wedding invitations.

Oh, I hear you on the “lists soothe my soul” thing! I totally find the same, although, I’ve learnt to compile my lists in such a way that I don’t feel overwhelmed. I now usually break my list up over days so that I’m doing one or two things a day. Some days though I’ll add quite a few things to a to do list because I find it motivating to tick things off.

Good luck with the wedding tasks!

I am such a list person too! In fact I was writing things on MY LIST as I read your post and you reminded me of a few things I needed to do LOL.

You are doing an awesome job getting all your sis’s stuff together - she is going to LOVE every bit of it because your love for her shows in all you do.

You know, I totally resisted lists growing up. My mom is a big lister… and here I am, turning into my mother and writing down everything. I carry my day planner everywhere so that I can add to my lists as I think of things.

That Kitchen Tea sounds like a lot of fun! I might have to steal that idea, as soon as the next girfriend announces that she is getting married.

Hope you had a productively soothing weekend. I worked, like I usuall do, and take my “weekend” through the week.
