My yoga practice has been less than stellar the last couple of days. In fact, I get a big fat goose egg for Friday and Saturday.
I had too many things to do, and I didn’t make yoga one of my priorities. It was on my mind, but it didn’t get done.
This doesn’t mean I’ve given up on yoga or that it hasn’t been helping me at all. In fact, I credit the initial 5 days of yoga for getting me back to moving again! Although my yoga practice fell off on both Friday and Saturday, I did manage to take a walk each of these days. That’s three consecutive days of cardio, after a whole month off.
On Thursday, I managed to take a 45 minute walk, and then slipped right into a 20 minute Gentle Hatha yoga routine. It was ideal for stretching my muscles.
I intended on doing the same thing on both Friday and Saturday—a nice, heart-pumping walk, immediately followed by yoga. However, I was derailed by the Kid Factor.
On Thursday, the kids were being entertained by my in-laws, who had come into town for the day. But on Friday and Saturday, the kids were…shall we say…a little more demanding. They wanted my attention, and there was no sneaking off for 20 minutes.
Fast forward to this morning: My mind raced through all the things I wanted to get done and I was wondering when I was going to fit in yoga, and more importantly, if I was going to be able to sneak away for 20 minutes. Then, my Rebellious Self starting voicing her opinion. My Rebellious Self rarely surfaces, but when she does, she means business. It’s the part of me that sticks up for my well being, and says enough is enough.
Something is wrong when you can’t ask your family for 20 minutes.
20 minutes. That’s it.
20 minutes to a better me.
20 minutes to a better mom.
20 minutes to a better wife.
Everyone benefits!
Starting today, I’m renewing my commitment to 31 days of yoga. And in doing so, I’m renewing my commitment to a better me.
Because it’s not just about the yoga.

You are so right ~ you absolutely deserve at least 20 minutes of you time, if not more. WTG at making the commitment to you and putting your foot down.
Absolutely! I agree, 20 minutes makes everyone happier!
Great post!
Thanks for your comment on my article over at Simplemom!
remind me… are you doing a yoga video? I like to record a show that is one in the mornings - it is on oxygen channel. i record it so i can fast forward through the commercials.
Danica~ Thanks, I’m working on it. One step at a time.
Melissa~ Thank you. I love your blog…very inspiring.
Dmoms~ I’m new at yoga, so I’ve been using the downloads from yogadownload.com. They’re great because you can print out PDFs of the poses (for newbies like me.) Thanks for the Oxygen channel tip though…I’m going to follow up on that.
