This is why I don’t drink diet coke

by kirwin on July 12, 2010

I crawled into bed over 2 hours ago, and I still  can’t sleep. It’s 12:23 a.m. as I type this.

I’m pretty darn sure it was that medium diet coke I got at the drive thru this afternoon.  Whatever the reason, I’ve been lying here, tossing and turning, basically berating myself for all the things I’m failing at. Let me count the ways:

  1. The house still isn’t unpacked, and it hardly feels like *home*.
  2. I need to get into a routine where I’m preparing fresh, healthy meals for lunch and dinner.
  3. I need to start holding the kids responsible for minimal things. Let’s start with them getting themselves dressed in a timely manner instead of needing multiple reminders.
  4. Um…not to beat a dead horse or anything, but I still need to get my own eating under control.
  5. The 6-year old really should be able to tie his own shoes. I should set aside some time for this.
  6. The 6-year old should be keeping up with his daily reading. I’ve really let it slide.
  7. The romance dept. could do with a little boost.

To keep things in perspective, let me list what I am doing well:

  1. I have already checked out two preschools for my daughter, and I have an appointment to see another one tomorrow morning.
  2. I have signed the kids up for swim lessons, 4x a week. They start tomorrow.
  3. I have started reading chapter books to the kids, and they LOVE them. Last week, we finished James and The Giant Peach, and we’ve just started The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
  4. Except for my husband’s office, I have done all of the unpacking.
  5. I can find my way around town.
  6. Even though I’m feeling spread thin, I’m making time to build legos with the kids and take them to the beach.
  7. It’s been 14 days, and we still don’t own a TV.

Typing this out has made me feel better. I’m still not sleepy, but I’m a bit more relieved.

number 7 is so so awesome! how is your husband doing with it? i hope you had a restful sleep after all. Not being able to sleep is the worst! Your “i did” list is really cool full of way better things than the “fail list” - focus on the positive.

favorite dressing: balsamic vinaigrette : )

K- you are doing AWESOME at getting unpacked and settled into your new home. It IS stressful and there will always be tons to do until you get everything in place to make it feel like your home. Hang in there and recognize that you are really doing a lot….oh and don’t be afraid to ask for help from J :) I am pretty sure he might help even if it’s just a little.

Hello,

My heart goes out to you! We can always find things to berate ourselves over. But you can only do as much as you can. It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job if you ask me! I also think your reasons for moving are really great. Good on you.

Best wishes!

Hope the unpacking and getting settled is going along swimmingly and that you are enjoying the new adventure. :)

Well done Kirwin. It sounds like you’re getting things done (and there will always be something else left to do on the to-do list).
