The little black dress

by kirwin on May 21, 2009

You knew it was coming…the little black dress. Everyone must have at least one little black dress in their closet.

As part of my Signature Style series {can I call it a series if this is only my fourth installment?} I would be remiss if I didn’t mention dresses. As the weather heats up, my dresses are starting to make an appearance again.

This is one of the two black dresses I wear often. They’re easy to throw on, and I prefer them to shorts. In fact, I rarely ever wear shorts.

I love the look of  jeans under a dress, but I’ve never felt that I can quite pull it off. I’m not sure if it’s the length of my dress (too long?) Any hints?

What is your favorite thing to wear in summer? Do you prefer shorts or dresses or skirts?

I’m sharing this post with Fashionable Friday.

Ideally, I wear dresses all summer long and I love the simplicity of a LBD even in the day time.

I think to wear the dress over the jeans, the dress needs to be a lot shorter. My dresses are all about knee length, so I haven´t really tried that either. You might need to go shopping in jeans and try on dresses with that specifically in mind :)

love the dress. I’m thinking more skirts and dresses this summer vs. shorts. I love the dress over jean look too. Maybe RML’s suggestion would work. I’m all of 5′2 so wonder if that has something to do with it.

LOVE it! It looks great and I can totally see how you could dress this up or down. I personally LOVE to wear dresses in the summer. The best thing about dresses is that they are an entire outfit in one step. You don’t have to think about matching top/bottom or anything. It’s just ready to go!

love this dress and you look amazing in it! seriously - stunning!

I love wearing dresses over jeans, but I normally do it with my casual or bohemian style dresses - i think it flows together nicely. But that’s just me!

Love your LBD ;)

Lets see, before baby #2 was born last summer and I had lost all the weight and more from baby #1 I loved my shorts and little summer dresses.

This summer, as I’m STILL working off baby weight round 2, I’ll be hanging out in jeans and tanks. Ugh, refuse to buy clothes that will fit now when I have SO many cute things a few sizes away.

And yes I do agree, everyone MUST have a little black dress! :)

I do love a little dress, although I don’t have a little black dress I do have a few others and am always on the lookout for new (thrifty) ones to add to my collection. I think I prefer them over shorts, especially on a hot day!

totally lovely LBD btw! and I remember you saying that you are a pear, and dresses are PERFECT for pears! I would totallly LOVE to find my perfect LBD. I have a GAP one I wore while pregnant. It doesnt really suit me.

You look fabulous in your little black dress! LOVE it!

@ RML~
I agree, but I don’t want to have special dresses to wear WITH jeans, and then dresses to wear WITHOUT jeans, you know? I know you know. ; ) We’re all about making more with less, right?! It’s a good idea to go shopping with jeans, though.

@ Denise~
I’m way more of a skirt/dress girl than shorts. I haven’t given up on the jeans-under look. I’ll find a way to make it work.

@ PP~
I totally agree — I love that you put the dress on and you’re done, ready to go. I throw on my flip flops, and I’m out the door.

@ Shannon~
I’m always open for fashion advice from you — thanks.
And thanks for your kind compliment.

I can’t blame my weight on “baby weight” anymore (she’s 3!), but I totally understand. As the weather heats up, I’ve got to peel away some layers, though.

There are so many places that sell cute (thrifty) dresses, now. Do you have an H&M in Oregon?

Thanks for the compliments on my LBD. And yes, most dresses are extremely forgiving of the pear shape. You’ve got to find a LBD that suits your style and your non-pregnant body — you deserve it.

@ Danica~
Thanks. I love how forgiving my dresses are! They hide a multitude of sins. ; )

Skirts and dresses, year ’round for me!

You look stunning in that dress! If there is something to hide, that dress does the job because you look marvelous.
