On Sunday, we had a birthday party for my 3-year old daughter. The theme was Her Favorite Things, which quickly evolved into:
her favorite colors — PINK and PURPLE.
her favorite foods — red meat, feta cheese, and loads of sweets
her favorite people — close family
and an invitation, with rewritten lyrics to These Are a Few of My Favorite Things
Originally, we were going to have an old fashioned barbeque, but the heatwave quickly sent us inside. The decorations I made for outside were used in the dining room, instead.

I created the pink and purple banner with scraps of paper that I already had. I did have to buy a few more pieces, but not many. (I don’t *scrapbook* but I always have scrapbook paper on hand for arts and crafts.)

I bought the pink tablecloth, the plates, the utensils, and the napkins at Target. For the pink polka-dot table runner, I used wrapping paper that I bought at Paper Source. I’m happy to say that no marks were made, so the wrapping paper will be re-purposed (as wrapping paper.)

I had extra “3’s” from when I made the invitations, so they were used to wrap the napkins.

The cake was simply frosted with lavendar frosting, since the inside of the cake was really the main attraction.

I have been wanting to make a cake like this ever since I saw the original. Obviously, I changed the rainbow colors to shades of pink and purple. Go here for the instructions!

The party favors were a mixture of pink and purple M&M’s, and they were inspired by the favors at this party.

My muse, the 3-year old.

That is the coolest cake I have ever seen! Looks like a great party!
Makes me wish I was 3 again; your daughters smile says it all. Lovely!
@ Laura~
Watching her run around…I wish I was three again, too!
@ Caroline~
Thanks for stopping by. Welcome.
Making the cake was fun — totally worth it!
Oh my goodness. What a perfectly pink & purple party. Any girl would love that, at least mine would. My oldest is 10 (yikes, just this week) and she still loves those girly colors. So sweet, way to go on putting together such a nice looking party.
that all looked so adorable especially your daughter.
good job mom!
Everything looked gorgeous, especially your daughter!!
I love all the details! You are so creative!
That is absolutely adorable! I LOVE the pink and purple cake. You are such a great mom, doing all of that for your little girl. My mom was really big on birthdays (still is!) and it was so wonderful to have someone like that when I was growing up. Your little girl is adorable and she is lucky to have you for a mom. You don’t know how much that kind of effort means to kids in the long run!
@ Renee~
Sometimes I wonder if my daughter truly likes pink and purple, or if her brother “taught” her to like pink and purple since she’s a girl. Time will tell…
@ Denise~
Thank you!
@ Renia~
Thanks. It was fun to put together!
@ marci~
My son is already planning his party in October. Right now, he’s stuck on a “jedi-training” theme…my mind is already whirling with ideas. LOL
@ PP~
Thank you — you’re so sweet. I hope my kids appreciate the effort! I could just buy store-bought favors and decorations, but I have too much fun creating them myself. In all honesty, it’s as much for ME, as it is for the little ones.
Hi there! Excited to find another “creative mama”, thank you for the kind words on my photography blog. I too am thrilled that the heat has subsided
Looks like your little one had a lovely party, the favors are great!
What a cutie! And beautiful cake. I really miss kids… I was an elementary school counselor for over 20 years but finally had to stop working - rare progressive disease.
The part of my job I honestly enjoyed most were the spontaneous little interactions with kids in the hall or children who would just want to have lunch with me. Just making them smile.
@ Ang~
I really do love your style of photography — thanks for coming by my blog!
@ Paul~
Welcome and congratulations! (I think you’re the first man to ever “step foot” in here!) LOL
I was a teacher, before becoming a mom, and I absolutely loved it. It was the best job in the world, being surrounded by the kindest, most gentle humans.
Wow Kirwin, you have some serious creativity about you girl! The cake is awesome. Can you send me a piece? Happy birthday to the kiddo.
@ Sami~
Thanks, Sami! It was so much fun to put together — I channeled my “inner Martha.” ; ) I wish I could send you a piece of cake; unfortunately, the leftovers are kinda mushed (the kids don’t care, though.)
what a darling party! i love the decorations and looove the cake. how did you do the frosting on the top of that cake? it looks so cool!! i am seriously drooling for cake now….. ugh!!!!
@ rachel~
I *LOVE* that you love the frosting on the cake…because my husband did it! I was so pooped (and in the need of a bath) by the end of the day on Saturday, that he frosted the cake for me. I just asked him, and he says he used a knife. What can I say? My man’s got mad skillz! ; )
You have SO got to post how you made that cake! Add me to the list of people in awe of your creativity. Your kids may not appreciate what you are doing for years and years… but I’ll bet that one day, they look back and feel very loved at your efforts.
Oh my word! What a beautiful cake, party, girl! Everything is just gorgeous! Thanks for stopping by!
@ ann elise~
The directions for the cake are here. It was fun to make, but lots of dishes to clean up! (Totally worth it.)
@ Dolly~
Thank you, and thank you for stopping by. The party was fun, but I’m relieved it’s over.
thanks for the kind words
I am so new to all this blogging stuff, but have found so many inspiring words and pictures. It can “use ” up time , but am also feeling that it nudges me to make better use of it too.
I can’t wait to look through your site in more detail as there is gift here.
Oh my word, Kirwin, I think I understand now why “Creative” takes up half your blog title. I’m amazed at the creativity! You had me at the “I created the pink and purple banner….”
And such a sweet little 3 yr old to be your muse! She’s just precious!
@ deb~
Yeah, blogging can take up a LOT of time. I’m struggling, but slowly finding my balance with it. Thanks for stopping by.
@ Jo~
Thank you! You are too kind.
And don’t let my 3-year old muse fool ya…her halo is held up by horns!! ; )
You outdid yourself, everything was perfect! And that cake?! OMG - delish!
Your daughter is ADORABLE
so precious
@ Shannon~
Thank you, chica. It was a lot of fun to put together.
You did awesome!!! I LOVE the homemade decoartions and party favors. But, I have to say that the CAKE takes the CAKE! So cool!
Your daughter looks so cute and happy on her birthday - I bet she will remember it for the rest of her life
@ Danica~
Thanks. It was so much fun to put together! I’m not sure my daughter will really remember it, but at least I’ll have the photos to prove it. LOL
I am new to your blog and I love it! The ideas for the decorations and party favors are awesome! I’ll have to remember that the next birthday party! Have a great day!
Okay, so I know I already commented, LOL, but I’m so excited that you linked up to this! My littlest one will be turning 1 in just 8 short weeks and I will definitely be referencing your ideas for his monkey themed party
Fabulous!
@ Chele~
Welcome, and thanks for the compliments.
Have a great weekend!
@ Ang~
If you need any help with the monkey themed party, let me know. (That’s not an empty offer, btw. I mean it.)
You must check out Martha Stewart’s Monkey themed kids party…lots of adorable ideas and the cake is so cool.
That looks like a wonderful party. The inside of the cake was truly a surprise. I have two parties coming up: 5 year old and 3 year old. Our 3 year old would like a fairy cake-any ideas? Thankyou for inspiring me with the ‘fun’ of it all.
@ hill upon hill~
I have seen an adorable little fairy party somewhere…I’ll have to go find the link for you — I’ll email it to you. The first thing that came to mind — it would be really cute to make a huge mushroom-shaped cake, with some fairies sitting on it. (just a thought.)
Thanks for stopping by!
You did a great job!
I alos keep scrapbook paper around, even though I don;t actually scrapbook, LOL!
