Living Mindfully — in the garden

Thank you to everyone who offered their kind words and advice after yesterday’s post. I must admit that I feel like a real whiner and complainer. What am I, 4 years old?

In the middle of my stress –pausing between handfuls of chocolate– I became very aware of an activity that always helps me relieve stress. It’s here, in my garden…

Time flies when I’m in the garden. It doesn’t matter if I’m weeding, deadheading, or planting…I lose track of time. It doesn’t surprise me that years ago, I took that Meyers-Briggs test and “Gardener” was one one of the Top 5 professions for me.

Yesterday and today, I managed to find some time in the garden, and it helped. A lot.

I need to remember this and be more mindful of my connection to nature.

What is your relationship with your garden? Do you love getting dirty or do you cringe at the thought?

This post has been shared with Tuesdays Unwrapped — a weekly post that reminds me to appreciate the small things.

well you know me, I’m hardly cringing at the thought of gardening. It too is one of my life reprieves and stress reducers.

am rubbish in the garden. I don’t know why - my plants just die, I sometimes try really hard, but I am not very consistent and a couple of days missed means the poor buggers don’t grow very well. Also we have lots of snails which ate everything I spent ages tending. grrr. I get immersed in painting and sewing and collaging.

Right now, we just have flower beds and an herb garden. They are not the rambling mix of flowers I used to have at another house (which I miss). However, I do like caring for them and dreaming of a large vegetable garden and mounds of flowers all over the yard!

Great stuff Kirwin. Nature (including the garden) is a great stress reliever. I’ve got a little herb garden going. It’s very satisfying watching my little babies grow.

Your garden is absolutely beautiful. I am so glad you found some time for it in the midst of your invitation making….I bet it made prepping all the invites that much easier after your much needed break.

My grandmother used to have a painted sign in her garden that read:

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth;
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

Sounds like that’s what your garden is for you. Makes me glad for you to have such a special place.

I’m not a gardener at all (maybe someday, it just isn’t right for my season of life right now), but the pictures from your garden certainly bring a smile!

oh , this touched me so .
I have a little business, Green Acres, a garden maintenance / soak up the great gardens of other people. Ours is so small since we added the pool a few years back.
I have some not so fond farm memories of a little too much hoeing and weeding, but honestly, time in the miracle of flowers and plants and herbs and dirt….. keeps me “grounded”

Your place looks fabulous.

Your garden is beautiful! I have often fantasized about gardening, but I’ve never lived somewhere that I could actually do it. So far experimenting with killing plants in pots is as far as I’ve gotten.

I got a bad sunburn on much of my back the other day weeding in front of my new picket fence (house is new, not fence and hadn’t been weeded all summer) the other day - lost track of time, even in the 95 degree heat!
