At the beginning of each month, it has become a habit to map out my monthly goals. I try to find goals for all areas of my Lifestyle Map. In addition to these goals, I choose a focus for each month.
For example, last month I focused on Sensuality and Conscious Romance. My April Challenge was to practice Conscious Romance with my husband for the entire 30 days of April. It proved to be a fantastic little endeavor, and one that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to feel more connected to their partner.
For May, my focus is Body & Wellness. I originally joked that there is nothing like the fast-approaching swimsuit season to inspire a focus on Body & Wellness; however, it goes much deeper than that.
For me, “Body & Wellness” means much more than thinner thighs and a great a$$. Sure, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want those things. Heck, I’ve even written an entire post on my distaste for the size of my a$$! But when I think about the true meaning of Body & Wellness, I think of daily exercise, good nutrition, yoga and meditation, positive affirmations, getting a good night’s sleep, and other small habits that you know you should be doing.
For the entire month of May –and beyond– I will focus on my Body & Wellness. Good health is the most important thing there is (besides love!), but you don’t always appreciate it until you lose it.
In my endeavor for healthier Body & Wellness, I will strive for the following:
1. Daily activity — at least 20 minutes
I know that a person needs more than 20 minutes for optimum health, but this is a mind trick I’m playing on myself. 20 minutes is absolutely, positively do-able. There’s no excuse for not fitting it in…and chances are, 99% of the time, I’m not going to stop at 20 minutes. In my reality, just getting motivated and out the door is the most difficult part of exercising.

2. Good nutrition
Good nutrition means different things to different people. For me, it used to mean low calories and/or low carbs, but not anymore. My current personal definition of good nutrition means a plant-based, mostly-vegan diet, which includes lots of fresh vegetables and legumes. It means having treats, but not every day. It means eating organic, whenever it is feasibly and financially possible.
I have been finding lots of inspiration from Shannon at Nourishing Days and Renee at FIMBY.

3. Daily meditation and/or yoga — at least 20 minutes
These two practices don’t always have to be combined, but in my opinion, they work well together. On a physical level, my body would greatly benefit from a daily yoga practice. Ever since I’ve had children, my left side (shoulder, upper back, neck) aches. Being right-handed, I’ve always carried my children on my left side, leaving my right hand to do things. And no, I don’t carry my children anymore, but it is still the side of my body that has the most aches and pains. On a spiritual level, my mind would benefit from the meditation and focus that is required in yoga. To quiet my mind for even 20 minutes, will help me in so many ways.
4. Daily Affirmations – 5 times a day
This idea comes directly from Amy at Feasibly Fit Mom. I strongly believe in the power of the mind and the positive results that can be manifested. My two affirmations come straight from Amy, and they are:
“My body is healthy and strong.”
“I rest when I am tired, eat nutritiously when I am hungry and operate at my highest function.”
5. A good night’s sleep – 8 hours a night
When you have children, there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances that prevent a good night’s sleep. However, for the most part, me not getting enough sleep lately has been 100% my own fault. I have been staying up late (either blogging or cuddling or watching junky TV) and getting up early to get a jump-start on the day. I have been burning the candle at both ends, and wondering why I’m so quick to lose patience. Duh.
6. Practicing other good habits
These vary from person to person, but for me, they would include:
~ Using the neti pot every evening (especially now, during allergy season)
~ Taking a multivitamin…every day instead of every once in a while
~ Drinking enough water (usually not a problem for me, but I’ve been slacking lately)
In the interest of full disclosure, I must mention that I have had a regular headache behind my left eye for the last five or six years — I don’t remember when it began. I’m pretty darn sure it’s sinus related, but I’d like to get to the bottom of it. No, I won’t disclose how much Tylenol I take; let’s just say it’s a lot. Too much. I’d like to see if proper care and nourishment of my body will help eliminate my constant headache.
I realize that it seems like a lot, but shouldn’t self-care be as regular as brushing your teeth?

I love this kind of stuff, it really encourages me.
I used to suffer from chronic headaches - 5-6 days/week. I cut out aspartame, drank more water and got my eyes checked (and new glasses). It seems to have gone away besides the occasional stress headache caused by a screaming toddler and baby :).
Thank you for the link. Sorry to hear about your headaches - I hope you are able to figure it out.
You might be happy to know that just today I’m starting a series of posts on being in the kitchen (which translates in our home to taking care of our health). I’m hoping you and others might find what I have to share helpful for their own vegan-ish journeys.
What a great series of goals…
I think your list is great - and I aspire to follow most of your plan as well.
I take a daily walk. And I really MEAN daily. Every.single.day.no.matter.what. It clears my head. Gets me moving. Makes me love my neighborhood all the more. Gives me an EXCELLENT chance to talk with one of my kids (who I choose to bring along one or twice a week - it’s been especially great for my relationship with my 12 year old daughter.) Sometimes I bring the dog. Sometimes I leave her behind because I don’t want it to be about the dog. It was my new year’s resolution and I’m proud to say I have not missed a day - even with the 97 inches of snow we got here last winter!
I’ve just started doing yoga - oh - how I love it!
I’m celebrating healthy eating with a trip to our farmer’s market this Saturday. It opens this week after a long, hard winter. Can’t wait to get my hands on some great stuff.
I’ll be anxious to hear how the neti pot helps - I’m intrigued by them, but have never used one myself.
Happy May to you!
@ Shannon ~
The headaches are getting old. Thanks for sharing what worked for you. I’ve had my eyes checked and it’s not them, I don’t eat any aspartame (a part from a Diet Coke, about 4 times a year), and I know that I can drink more water. I’m tempted (but scared) to eliminate all sugar, which really means chocolate. It’s my vice.
@ Renee~
I think I’ll edit the post so that it links directly to your new series. You are a big inspiration for me. ; )
@ Cathy~
Good for you, taking your daily walk. And in the snow, no less! I have a walking trail right outside my house, so I really don’t have any excuse. About the neti pot…We’ve had one and used it (sporadicly) for years. It works very, very well. The first time, I was really nervous because who wants to voluntarily put salt water IN their nose! It doesn’t hurt though, and it totally relieves pressure in all of your sinus cavities. I recommend it.
Great post! Generally I don’t exercise and I don’t eat very healthy foods either. I let myself get away with this because I’m thin, but being thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy. I really need to work on getting more activity into my life and eating more fruits and veggies. Thanks for this inspiring post!
PS - Do you really think the neti pot works? I’ve used it and didn’t have much luck with it!
Inspiring stuff - I need to do a bit more of all of this! I really don’t drink enough water and I don’t get enough exercise. Keep us posted on your progress!
Great goals Kirwin, you are a star!!
I am trying to drink more water, my apples and take my vitamin and fish oil everyday. A small but hopeful start.
your goals are excellent ones. Now, how will you achieve them? get specific:
when will you exercise?
what will you do for exercise?
when will you do yoga?
what will it take for you to get good rest?
what obstacles will get in the way of you achieving your goals?
how will you overcome those obstacles?
what is considered success? how will you measure these goals?
okay, these questions are just to get you thinking deeper. You do not need to answer them here : )
Hey Kirwin,
Thanks for your lovely comments and the links - you’re such a sweetie.
I SO agree that health and wellness is a lifestyle thing not just a diet, get skinny thing. It’s also about wellness of the mind and spirit. You’ve covered it all with your goals. Best of luck with it. I’m looking forward to hearing how you go.
@ PP~
I’m trying to concentrate on “healthy” versus “thin.” When I put too much emphasis on the “thin” aspect, it goes bad. I become a bit OCD about it, and that is just bad. Re: the neti pot…I’ve always had good success with them, as long as I use it!
@ Shoestring~
I’ll keep you posted. I’ve just got to get the ball rolling.
@ RML~
I think we’re working on similar things. We’ll get there!
@ Dmoms~
You’re the best. ; ) Okay…I think you’ve given me stuff for a follow-up post!
@ Sami~
It’s so much more about health and wellness than size 0 jeans. That said, I continue to get wrapped up in it.
Positively Present and I are so much alike. I tend to veer off the healthy path because I am thin already. You are right. It is so much more than a skinny thing. It’s a health thing. I do so much better when I add healthy habits to my to-do lists. I’m not sure why I stopped. Starting tomorrow, healthy habits will be back. Mine are usually 20-30 minutes of activity, 64 oz of water, at least 5 veggies and 2 fruits, yoga, and time to think. Looking forward to tomorrow! Isn’t it so much better when you know you are not in it alone!
Thanks so much for commenting on my blog!
I’ve just started making jewelry, but someday I hope to share with the word and I’m sure I could do custom pieces!
@ Marci~
Although I do want to lose a little weight, it is more about health than being thin. I want to be a spry old lady, full of piss and vinegar! ; )
@ Desiree~
Your pieces were really pretty. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
I feel so *blessed* to have stumbled upon this delightful blog. I really appreciate your openness about your goals and your progress. You have a gold mine of ideas here, and you've only been online a few months… I look forward to reading a lot more here.
@positively present - I am a strong believer in the neti pot. I learned about it from an ear, nose & throat specialist. After I started using it my allergies got better. I've also started using it at the first sign of a cold and I don't get sick any more. I recommend it to all my patients. (And I don't own stock in a neti pot company, but maybe I should!)
@ ann elise~
You are SO sweet to say this! More than half the time, I wonder what the heck I’m doing…having a blog! Thanks so much for your encouragement.
Great post! Very inspirational. Reminds me that I need to just go ahead and incorporate the meditation/yoga thing and start my gratitude journal, again. On another note…my hubby loves the neti pot. He has recommended it to others and it worked for them. It actually saved one guy from having to get an MRI for his headaches. I’ve only had to use it a few times last year and it worked great for me. You’ve got some great goals! Thanks for sharing.
@ lifelessons4u~
I’m still working on making it all “habit.”
Re: the neti pot…I think it’s great!
Great goals for May - LOVE them all!
Bleh to the neti pot! Only if I must
@ Danica~
I *love* the neti!!
