Quantum Wellness Cleanse: Day 10

by kirwin on August 19, 2009

Exercise:
1-hour boot camp

Breakfast: 1-serving Bob’s Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal, 2 Tbsp almond butter, 1/2 banana sliced,

Snack: apple larabar, and later…decaf soy latte (tall)

*** From 9 am to 1:30 pm, I was out doing Back to School things with my son. I intended to treat him to lunch at Whole Foods, but the choices turned out to be too weird for his taste. He wanted a treat at the Target-Starbucks, hence my soy latte.  Once we got home and I made the boy his almond butter & honey sandwich, I wasn’t in the mood to prepare something for myself. Hence, the random snacking that I call “lunch”.

Lunch: a couple tastes of almond butter while making the boy’s sandwich, 1/2 cup Soy Delicious coconut ice-cream (hey, I’m just proud that I actually measured it out and didn’t eat straight from the container!!)

Afternoon Snack: corn tortilla chips + homemade guacamole ( avo, tomato, red onion, salt)

Dinner: (2) carrot apple muffins with almond butter, 1 cup decaf instant coffee

Observations:
Um, yeah. Anyone else notice the huge lack of vegetables and actual “meals” today?!

My advice to anyone to does this cleanse, is to be prepared for Day 9 and Day 10, when the novelty has worn off and you’re tired of spending all day in the kitchen. Ideally, I’d have treated myself to a delicious GF vegan meal from a restaurant this evening. Unfortunately, no such place is around here.

I managed to abide by all the “rules” of the cleanse, but I wouldn’t exactly describe today’s eats as “healthy.”

One interesting note –my decaf soy latte from Starbucks… I’ve never had one of these before, and I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t have any packets of stevia with me so I didn’t add any sweetener to it. And I always always always add sweeteners to my coffees and lattes. Anyhow, I wasn’t expecting it to taste as sweet (and yummy) as it did. My son had a taste and promptly made a face, because he didn’t find it sweet at all.

Could my taste buds be changing?

Quantum Wellness Cleanse: Day 9

by kirwin on August 18, 2009

Exercise:
45 min. brisk walk on treadmill

Breakfast: 1-serving Bob’s Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal, 2 Tbsp almond butter, 1/2 banana sliced, 1 cup instant decaf coffee

Snack: banana larabar, spoonful of almond butter

Lunch: <1 c. leftover panzanella from last night

Afternoon Snack: green smoothie: 1 cucumber, juice of 2 lemons, 8 kale leaves, popcorn drizzled with vegan margarine (more than my share!)

Dinner: non-dairy vanilla yogurt drizzled with agave, 2 carrot apple muffins with almond butter

Observations:
Okay, the novelty is wearing off. Today, I was just wanted to eat…to comfort eat.

There’s been a lot going on lately –wedding details, school starting, the reality of selling our house– and I’ve been stressing. It’s my typical M.O. to internalize these things, mull them over, and spend a lot of time in my head. Too much time in my head. Yes, I expect a lot of myself, and I know this is not good.

Anyhow, I had a big realization today that I wanted to eat my stress away. Duh. I’ve always known that I’m an emotional eater, but today it became so clear. I wasn’t hungry, and I didn’t have a craving for anything in particular. Pretty much cookies, brownies, chocolate would have done the trick. I’m not talking about a small serving…I would have preferred 2 or 3 servings of whatever to numb the stress away.

It’s pretty clear that I need to find a healthier alternative for relieving the stress, no?

Living Mindfully — Right now

August 10, 2009

The bachelorette weekend in Napa was wonderful. I haven’t been to that many bachelorette parties, but this one was definitely the best.
I returned to a house that had imploded: toys, laundry, a tent, wilting plants, sour-smelling sippy cups, sour-smelling children, shoes, etc, etc… I also returned to a tired husband and children.
Today, as I pondered [...]
